Among the Vapes, breath is wealth, and status is counted in stovepipes. A raider wears one smoke vent. A Leader wears a crown of three, pouring near-black smoke, and carries an iron command staff that smokes like a censer.
Leaders deck their armor in trophies: scraps of fleet hull plating, stolen medals, pieces of ships that didn’t get away.
Every Vape breathes Dalfür gas, and every Vape carries a transmitter, so their recovery ships can beam up their dead. Nothing gets left behind.
Slow and rattling, every word costs breath“Breath… is wealth. And you… are very… poor.”
