Alpine Stretch has been flying since he was seven years old. By the time he made star pilot of Admiral Baromador’s 48th Space Squadron, he was the kind of hero they put in newsreels: a flair for adventure, a penchant for danger and a grin to match.
Then came the discharge. No details were ever released, only rumors of an altercation with the Admiral himself. These days Alpine hunts bounties across the galaxy in his old fleet flight jacket, with the rank and unit patches torn off.
He talks in a folksy drawl, gives everyone exactly one chance, and apologizes to the people he shoots. He drinks Port of Saturn, which kills bacteria about as well as it kills brain cells. Ask him about the fleet and he’ll tell you he’s done with it. Ask him twice and he’ll change the subject.
Calm, with a rifle at his neck“Okay, okay. Just watch that rifle now, boy. I’ve gotten pretty darn attached to this neck, thank you.”
